This research compares the uses of some graphic signs in the editorial systems of Brazil and Mexico. Comparisons were conducted by reviewing the orthotypographic norms of the Portuguese and Spanish languages. The translation of the first part of the book O Reino das Mulheres Sem Lei Ângelo Guido, which was also part of this research process, was used as a mediating vehicle. The materials that make up the comparative corpus were for the Spanish language the Ortografía de la Lengua Española, edited by the Real Academia Española, and El libro y sus orillas, written by the Mexican editor and proofreader Roberto Zavala Ruiz, and for the Portuguese language the Nova Gramática do Português Contemporâneo, written by Celso Cunha and Lindley Cintra, and the Manual de Editoração e Estilo, produced by the Brazilian editor Filho Martins Plinio.

This work was developed within the Translation research scope and Sociodiscursive Practices of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at the University of Brasília (POSTRAD/UnB). Its object of study is the terms of the content of Defensive Driving (DD), one of the theoretical requirements for obtaining the National Driver's License (CNH), aiming at the suggestion of a bilingual glossary in the Portuguese Language and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) pair. The target audience is candidates for Deaf drivers, as well as translators, interpreters, teachers, and other interested people in the area. The specific objectives of the research lie in: i) carrying out a bibliographical research on the Traffic Legislation in order to trace the trajectory of the Deaf citizen's right to drive; ii) survey how information is presented on the Brazilian Traffic Departments websites , seeking accessibility for the Deaf public, and whether there is bilingual material to promote access; and iii) highlight the process stages for obtaining a driver's license in the Federal District (DF) focusing on the theoretical-technical course content, demonstrating the importance of DD in everyday traffic. The theoretical foundation was divided into five topics, which address: translation and the Brazilian Sign Language: a look of struggle!; Translation Studies and Terminology: historical aspects; Libras Terminology: brief postgraduate research; bilingual glossary: concept and structure of a terminographic work focused on Libras; Corpus Linguistics (CL) as a facilitator and ratifier in the extraction of terms. The methodological path that defines the scope of the glossary was divided into four stages: i) identification of the object of study and target audience; ii) selection of terms in Portuguese based on the LC using the AntConc tool; iii) informants selection, through the application of questionnaires with DETRAN's and qualified Deaf people, in addition to identifying terms in media materials; and iv) preparation and organization of terminology sheets (FT) in Portuguese and Libras. In response to the collection, 145 candidate terms were located, and 10 terms were selected to suggest a pilot project macro and microstructure for a bilingual glossary. This research does not address the creation of term signals. These term-signals come from the informants. This study is part of a project that is underway at DETRAN/DF called “Libras no Trânsito”. It is expected that this proposal will provide support for the preparation of teaching materials suitable for the Deaf public. Thus, we highlight the importance of using visual resources in Libras and written Portuguese as a second language, to promote the effective training of this driver. Finally, improvements are sought for the Deaf linguistic accessibility in the environment of the Department of Transit of the Federal District, in addition to encouraging new research in the area.

The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the implementation of linguistic accessibility in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) at the Juscelino Kubistchek Memorial (JK), located in Brasília - DF. Recently, the Memorial has adopted as one of its mottos: “Modernity and Accessibility”. For this, the work begins with a review of the main laws that support the linguistic and educational rights of the Deaf community, making it possible to understand the civil importance of the proposed theme, especially dealing with the theme of public and educational policies (first chapter) . Followed by a rigorous conceptual and historical assessment of linguistic accessibility in general and then specifically in museums (second chapter). This second has two central points: the first, to present the concept of accessibility, converging, then, to linguistic accessibility; and the second, presenting the importance of linguistic accessibility in museums and then, converging on the JK Memorial. In the third chapter, it is verified how the space of the Memorial has treated the translation in Libras. Here, we have two central contributions to the work: the first, deals with an in-depth study of the technical criteria for translation into Libras, especially with regard to Libras windows; and the second, the application of questionnaires to Deaf volunteers and the investigation, in loco, regarding the translation mechanisms used and their quality within the Memorial. As a result, it could be concluded that in the technological part the Museum is partially adequate, however it lacks in the face-to-face service in Libras. In this final chapter, the questionnaires are applied and the on-site investigation is carried out for conclusions regarding the current situation of the JK Museum. The work ends with the presentation of the final considerations, where the contributions are expressed, in addition to suggesting proposals for adapting the Memorial, so that it can achieve the objectives of the motto adopted by it.

This work is part of the research line Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, developed in the Postgraduate Program in Translation Studies - POSTRAD and in the Laboratory of Technology for the Studies of Translation and Interpretation of Sign Languages in Brazil and the World - LabTecTrad. The object of study is Automatic Translators. The general objective is to analyze the translation processes carried by Automatic Translators for Brazilian Sign Language - Portuguese. The target audience for this research are translators who use these technologies as work tools. Therefore, it has the following specific objectives: i) to present a brief history of machine translators that use the language pair sign language and Portuguese; ii) search for government sites and institutions that use automatic translators in Sign Language; iii) interview the group that study, organize and create automatic translators and find out how many deaf people participate in these teams and iv) investigate their strengths and weaknesses in the construction of meaning in PL. The main motivation for carrying out this research came after i’m joined as a professor at the Federal Institute of Brasília - IFB, where courses are offered in Initial and Continuing Training - FIC, Technical and Higher Undergraduate and Postgraduate. All courses are free and open to the community in general and the call uses automatic translators as a form of linguistic accessibility. As a way of understanding this functioning, it was necessary to adopt the methodological path of Tuxi (2017) where we initially made the following path: i. organize a translation project; collect translations from machine translators; analyze the translations made by them and propose a translation. As a result, it was possible from the contrast performed, to propose a translation that we present in the form of QRCode and that we believe that in the future it can be inserted in the website of the Federal Institute of Brasília - IFB. This work joins the others in the field of Sign Language Translation Studies and hopes to reinforce the area.

This research is based on the need for translations into Libras so that the Deaf can clearly understand what is being translated, specifically with regard to translations of literary works. Knowing the great difficulty in relation to the translation of literary texts due to the language rich in idiomatic expressions and metaphors. This situation happens mainly due to the difficulty that some translators face in translating such works, remembering that the target audience understands the world through visuals. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to analyze a literary work translated into Libras and to make notes of the passages in which the use of Classifiers would contribute to a visual and clear translation. The work chosen is the book "The Little Prince" by the French author Antonie Exuperié, we chose a work translated into Libras carried out by the Accessibility in Public Libraries (ABP) project of the Brazilian federal government. The aim of this study is to identify the classifiers used in translation, expand and disseminate the use of classifiers, awakening and encouraging interpreters to use classifiers in their translations. The approach chosen for the work was qualitative, since it is intended to better understand the problem and seek solutions for it. The target audience of the research focuses on hearing and Deaf translators and interpreters. Based on this need, the translation process was organized into videos; the creation of the sign for the character Pequeno Príncipe, palpated using a classifier and the other characters based on studies previously carried out on the work. With the work we noticed that there is a great difficulty on the part of the translators in using classifiers in the translations, even in the passages that allow the use, some translators choose to use signs or translation close to Portuguese. We hope that this research will contribute to future translations and research related to literary translations into Libras.

The constant changes in human migration flows bring to the forefront of discussion how to safeguard fundamental rights enshrined in international treaties and domestic legislations, such as an individual's linguistic rights. Such a right aims to ensure that people with little or no proficiency in a country's official language can access essential services through professional interpreting provided by a "community interpreter". Among those who are prevented from accessing social services due to little language proficiency are the refugees who, apart from being particularly vulnerable, are unable to communicate with service providers because they speak a language other than that spoken by the agencies whose services they seek. Faced with such a challenge, it is necessary to implement language assistance policies that could be translated into an integrated interpreter's training, certification, and accreditation system. Even though few countries provide specialized interpreting training, most of those that do have some type of training framework depend on manuals and ethical codes written without due consideration of linguistic studies or specialized reflections on the nature of translation and interpretation. Against such a backdrop, this research aims to look into some of such materials-manuals, guides, and codes of ethics - written in English, in order to identify how language, translation, and interpretation concepts are understood and portrayed. Based on the results derived from such a linguistic analysis, we aimed at reflecting on the training of community interpreters in refugee and migration contexts. In order to understand how interpreter-mediated interactions unfold, we adopted the theoretical and methodological framework of Interactional Sociolinguistics, which focus on the verbal interaction dynamics and on the agency of all participants, including that of the mediators themselves. The data were collected and analyzed drawing on corpus-based discourse analysis concepts, which enabled us to identify idealized and impractical understandings of the translation activity and the interpreter's role. Such understandings were linguistically translated into the use of words, among others, such as "neutrality", "impartiality" and "accuracy". Even though some of the materials were written in countries that have a history of hosting immigrants and of implementing language assistance services, they convey limited and essentialist concepts of the translation activity, taking it to be a transparent and invisible procedure. Against such concepts, we propose a preliminary reflection of interpreter training based on the dialogical and situated interaction and on the interpreter's agency, a protagonist of undeniably imbalanced human interactions.

Audio description is a modality of audiovisual translation that provides accessibility to visual content. One of the practices in audio description is interlingual translation of audio description scripts. However, when one transfers a script from one culture to another, it is not only the language that is considered. There are nationwide guides that have different guidelines on how to make an audio description that meets the expectations of the target audience. Students who study audiovisual translation often find it difficult to justify their audio description choices. In this dissertation, we propose activities based on norms, functionalist theories, and practical analysis that collaborate with assertiveness in scripts. To research on the implications of these differences and to create a material that assists the beginner audio describer, the present work proposes to compare, from a functionalist approach of Translation Studies, two versions of English (from the United States) audio description scripts of the film Yesterday (2019): one originally made for the streaming platform Amazon and the other translated from a previous script in Spanish within the framework of an audio description workshop and that is available in the catalog of the Audesc app. For the analysis, we will use the source text analysis model proposed by Mazur (2020) and Bardini's (2020) classification of audio description techniques. We intend to identify the differences between the two scripts and infer if these differences are related to the standards of audio description that guided them to create didactic units that assist the audio descriptor to make his translational decisions understanding the intersectionality between the standards and the AD.

This research, in the field of Translation Studies, is based on Walter Benjamin’s work, especially regarding his thoughts expressed in “The Translator’s Task”, to examine the interface between Translation and Law, shedding light on the significance of translators in the exchange of ideas from one country to another, i.e., in the task of transforming cultures and languages, not carrying messages. As experience should occur ahead of theories (MESCHONNIC, 2010), the starting point of this research was a translation, from English into Portuguese, of the original (BENJAMIN, 2008): the lead opinion of the majority written by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch in the Ramos v. Louisiana case, argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in 2020. In that opportunity, the Court adopted a meaningful rationale by discussing the possibility of overturning the Apodaca v. Oregon precedent and explaining the racist origins of Louisiana’s and Oregon’s laws. As a result, it ruled that the US Constitution requires unanimous verdicts to convict defendants of serious offenses. Given that, there are some pragmatic reasons why the original could lead to a transformation – in accordance with Walter Benjamin, his followers and their shared epistemology – in the target culture. First, it highlights the complementarity in languages (BENJAMIN, 2008), as this research revealed a possible enrichment of the Portuguese language in the process of language relations. Second, it lays down the unanimity requirement, an important concept to the Brazilian rules of criminal procedure once jurors recover their legal right to openly deliberate within a jury trial. Third, it goes back in history to the roots of Oregon’s and Louisiana’s laws, which could foster social awareness on the issue of racism in Brazil. The findings of this research indicate that by accepting strangeness, rather than erasing it, the opinion delivered by Justice Neil M. Gorsuch in the source culture could eventually transform the Brazilian context, not only in terms of the country’s language, but also concerning its culture, which goes beyond the legal area.

Based on the problem that literary works translation occasionally face negative reception due to criticism from not specialized agents in translation, and based on the perception that translation criticism and literary criticism influence directly the dissemination and reception of literature translation, this research aims to delve into the concepts of reception and translation criticism, seeking to investigate their influence on the translation market of literary works, specifically in the works of Clarice Lispector, grounded on the notions of Berman's critique (1995) and Toury’s norm (1995). Based on the outline of an analytical trajectory for translation criticism, proposed by Antoine Berman (1995), consisting of six stages, this case study intends, through the critical and comparative analysis of the short stories Felicidade Clandestina, Restos do Carnaval and Cem Anos de Perdão by Clarice Lispector (1920-1977), published in the book Felicidade Clandestina (1971, 1998), the English translations of Torture and Glory, The Remnants Of Carnival and A Hundred Years' Pardon by Giovanni Pontiero published in the book Selected Crônicas (1996) and the English translations Covert Joy, Remnants of Carnival and One Hundred Years of Forgiveness, by Katrina Dodson published in the book The Complete Stories (2018), to analyze the translations published in 1996 and 2018, seeking to investigate which strategies are most used by translators in the translation of Lispector's short stories, observing how they are received in the target language. In addition, based on evidence that the translations of Lispector's works into English facilitated the entry of Clarice's literature into other countries, and in order to address the scope of translations of Clarice's works into languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Mandarin and Dutch, this research aims to develop a brief overview of the internationalization of Clarice's literature. The aim is, therefore, to contribute to the discussion of ideas about literary translation criticism and, more specifically, about the criticism and reception of Clarice's works in translation, based on the investigation of Lispector's translations dissemination and their internationalization for Englishspeaking and other cultures.

This research was developed in the research line Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, of the Graduate Program in Translation Studies – POSTRAD at the University of Brasília. The object of study are the signals used in sporting events such as Deaflympics events. In this sense, this work has the general objective of organizing a multilingual glossary as a tool for deaf translators and interpreters who work in sporting events such as Deaflympics. To achieve this objective, we proposed the following specific objectives: i. Investigate the role of translator and interpreter of Libras and IntSL (intramodal and interlingual interpretation) in Brazil and in the international context at the Deaflympics 2022 event; ii. Describe the history of national and international deaf sport over time until reaching the Deaflympics 2022 and iii. Identify the way of registering Terminologies in a multilingual glossary through international and national research on sporting events. As a theoretical basis, we used for research on translators and interpreters for deaf and non-deaf people: Pinheiro (2022), Granado (2019) and Nogueira (2016), specific in the areas of study of translation and interpretation, knowledge about simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, intramodal and intermodal, on theorists of Libras and International Sign Language (IntSL), thermology and glossary for sporting events. The methodological proposal follows the model of Tuxi (2017), that is, it presents a macrostructure and microstructure of the term signs based on the organization of terminological sheets in English, IntSL, Portuguese, Libras and Illustration, with specialization of the term signs used in the 24th Deaflympics. In the current glossary there are a total of 21 signs of sports and 85 signs of services, in addition to including videos of the use of QR codes as a tool in the multilingual Glossary of term signs by Deaflympics

Writing and translating texts for defence of territories are ancient activities. Within the scope of the Brazilian Armed Forces, the translation of military texts was intensified with the participation of Brazilian troops in peacekeeping missions of the United Nations, in particular, the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti. This study, inserted in the disciplinary field of Translation Studies, in its theoretical, descriptive, product-oriented branch, has the general objective of describing and analyzing the translation into Spanish of the Brazilian Defence White Paper. Specifically, the aim is to: (i) map the translation units based on the Brazilian Defence White Paper and its translation into Spanish; (ii) identify military terms in Portuguese and Spanish, based on frequency of use, used in the area of National Defence in the corpus; and (iii) examine whether the translation of the Brazilian Defence White Paper into Spanish uses terminology similar to that found in white papers originally written in Spanish. For this purpose, a corpus composed of three subcorpora was compiled, namely: (i) the Brazilian Defence White Paper (LBr); (ii) a translation of the LBr into Spanish; and (iii) the Libros Blancos de Defensa, produced by Spanishspeaking countries (LEsp), published in the last decade of the 1900s and in the first decade of the 2000s. This work is mainly based on Descriptive Translation Studies (i.e. Toury, 1995; Pym, 2017), in the concepts of domain knowledge (i.e. Scardamalia; Bereiter, 1991) and Translation Units (i.e. Alves, 2000; Hurtado Albir, 2007), as well as in Corpus-Based Translation Studies. The quantitative results point to the existence of an asymmetry with regard to the frequency of use of some terms in the source text and in the target text. It also presents a discrepancy regarding the total number of items and forms of both texts. This discrepancy is related, among others, to the structural differences between the two languages and possible imbalances of a translational nature

This master's dissertation aims to analyze the development of translation competence, more specifically the thematic ability/terminological knowledge of translation learners in the Bachelor of Letters in English Translation at the University of Brasilia. Therefore, our proposal is to evaluate the text of the students of English-Portuguese Translation Practice: Technical and Scientific Texts, and the application of a questionnaire and a translation activity and use the mentioned text of the students to compose collecting data for analysis. The research aims to guide students to make proper use of terminology tools, thinking about their relevance, expectations and challenges in understanding and translating texts, using strategies to solve problems and support tools. The work is also concerned to demonstrate how the translation activity, mediated by the professor, can be favorable to the development of criticism and new translation practices, realizing that the use of terminological tools are important resources that help the translator to carry out his tasks with ease, more efficiency, agility, and confidence, using the target language clearly and precisely. The research makes it possible to identify the difficulties faced by the students in matters related to the textual production of specialized knowledge and makes it possible to analyze the positive and negative points, regarding the methodology used in the classroom in the textual production and allows changing methods to solve negative points and the production of other actions to improve the conduct of discipline. The dissertation used the quali-quantitative method to analyze the texts of a group of students of bachelor of Translation English course at the University of Brasilia. The students were invited to take part in the research by carrying out a translation activity and answering a questionnaire with questions on the following subjects: 1) How do you evaluate the choice of the text presented in terms of the subject and the textual genre of the report 2) How do you evaluate its methodology, 3) What were the challenges and difficulties during the translation of the presented text 4) What were the expectations when identifying and learning new translation strategies, 5) What strategies were used to prepare the target text. The proposal was to present the work to the students and explain the translation activity, presenting some free support platforms to assist in the activity. Students were instructed to translate the first five pages of the text Valuing Water, made available by UNESCO. The activity was evaluated and was mandatory. The chosen activity made it possible to assess the translation capacity of each student, realizing the adaptation skills needed to perform the task. Research participants were guaranteed anonymity in their responses. This dissertation consists in introduction, which presents the theme, objectives, and justification of this investigation. In chapter 1, we describe how teaching and learning process works. In chapter 2, we discuss the concepts of technical and scientific translation, the role of the technical and scientific translator, the translator and the use of technological resources, and the relationship between translation and terminology. In Chapter 3, we present the methodology for applying the Didactic Unit and in Chapter 4, we analyze the collected data and discuss the research results. Finally, we present the final considerations and bibliographical references.

One Piece has become the best-selling manga in history, with several translations around the world. In Brazil, it has received different translations in its comic book version as well as in its animated version. Although they both come from the same source and have very similar scripts in the original language (the Japanese language), both versions that are available today have distinct translations: the manga respects the standardized written language more and avoids the constant use of slangs, while the anime makes use of these slangs to try and bring the translation closer to the Brazilian audience and make it sound more natural. This paper aims to carry out a comparative analysis between the most recent translations of the One Piece manga and anime to investigate the reasons that led to the differences between them, identifying the strategies the translators possibly used (Aubert, 1998), and how they deal with the linguistic and sociocultural differences of the Japanese language and culture when translated into Portuguese. To do that, we explore concepts of the Japanese language, such as the structure of the language and the usage of onomatopoeias (Shibatani, 2009; Frellesvig, 2018; Wakabayashi, 2021), we trace the development of anime and manga in Japan and the reasons for their international acclaim (Luyten, 2000; Schodt, 1983; Napier, 2005), we address the language of comic books, especially that particular of manga (Nakagawa, 2016; Ramos, 2018; Perides, 2018), and the obstacles that appear when it is translated (Leitão, 2020; Pimentel, 2018), and we investigate concepts of audiovisual translation in the context of dubbing (Franco; Araújo, 2011; Cézar; Immediato, 2017; Chaume, 2001), and slangs (Preti, 2007; Santos, 2014). The analysis was conducted through an established set of episodes from each season of the anime, from which we took fragments where the translation presented slangs, and afterwards compared these fragments with their equivalent in the manga. We were able to identify the usage of the translation strategies modulation and adaptation in the dubbed translation, which had a much larger number of slangs than the manga and in different contexts, whether to insert informal elements in the translation, to make the Brazilian audience feel closer to the anime through identification, or to create a type of characterization to a specific character, while the translation in the manga tends to be more literal and closer to the original text conceived by the author. Furthermore, we noticed that both texts make an effort to somehow insert elements from the Japanese culture, such as honorific titles, in their translation.

The theme of this dissertation falls within the line of research Translation and Sociodiscursive Practices, developed in the Translation Studies Program - POSTRAD, at the University of Brasília. The object of study are the terms and term signs from the area of History used in bilingual assessment processes (Portuguese-Libras), with the aim of proposing a bilingual glossary of the Portuguese – Libras language pair. To this end, we have the following specific objectives: i. describe the teaching of History to the Deaf; ii. identify the processes and theories used to organize glossaries in sign language and iii. Analyze how the term signs are registered in translation based on semantic studies. To achieve the objectives, the methodological path collected terms and term signs from the ENEM tests (National High School Exam) and the bilingual entrance exams at UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina), both from the years 2017, 2018 and 2019, both in written Portuguese and in Libras through Videoproof. Thus, starting from the search for the most used terms in the Portuguese test, we looked for the term signs translated in the Libras video tests. To catalog the most frequent terms and term signs in the database (written tests and Video tests), an inventory of the lexicon of the History area was created using knowledge and experience as a bilingual teacher, manually. We used resources that corpus linguistics offers, such as the Antconc program, with terms in Portuguese, to provide a basis and security in the survey. The entire work was theoretically based on the Communicative Theory of Terminology (TCT) by Maria Tereza Cabré (1995) and also Socioterminology based on Faulstich (2006). The analysis of terms and term signs in the History area sought the principles of bilingual Terminology (TUXI, 2017) for better conceptualization and clarity when translating this linguistic pair (Portuguese/Libras), as well as in bilingual History teaching ( with an educational interpreter or bilingual teacher), examining some linguistic variations and lexical ambiguities found in the research. Finally, using the terms and term signs collected, a bilingual Portuguese/Libras de História glossary was created, launched on an online platform (website: https://glossariohistoria-libras.fly.dev/), with the aim of and as specific objectives of providing new information, generating and producing knowledge that brings improvements to the area of translation and teaching sign language.

This dissertation is part of translation studies, in the line of research Translation and sociodiscursive practices, and its objective is to propose a Bilingual Alphabetical Lexicon (Libras and Portuguese). The methodological procedure involved searching for signs in the health area already used by the Deaf community, based on the Ministry of Health's Glossary Saúde de A a Z (Health from A to Z), published on the ministry's website, which contains the main themes, actions, public policies and programs of the Ministry of Health in the prevention and promotion of health in Brazil. In the absence of terms on this website, other legal means were also used, such as the Virtual Health Library, also run by the Ministry of Health. As a product of this research, the proposal was to register a bilingual lexicon (Libras/Portuguese) of instrumental vocabularies from the health area in Libras. Health is everyone's right and the duty of the state, guaranteed through social and economic policies aimed at reducing the risk of disease and other illnesses and universal and equal access to actions and services for its promotion, protection and recovery. From this perspective, the Deaf community has the right to access health through their communication channel, in this case the Brazilian Sign Language - Libras. That's why this dissertation is of great importance, as it could promote the expansion of lexicons in a specific area, in this case Health in Libras, and promote the visibility of Libras.

This dissertation aimed to publicize the importance of tactile Libras in the process of translating and interpreting country music to analyze the perception of Deafblind people. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, we had some lives by country singers and among these lives, the singer Marília Mendonca was a pioneer in providing the translation into Libras of her country songs through the presence of Libras Translators and Interpreters. Given this repercussion, we thought about what translation and interpretation into tactile Libras would be like to provide cultural accessibility for the Deafblind and we have the possibility of recording their perceptions. We observed that, despite some initiatives in country music, in relation to the translation process, Surdocego does not yet have effective accessibility in tactile Libras and, therefore, it is necessary to provide new research and more studies with translations in tactile Libras, so that the Deafblind Community has access to information from this form of communication. Therefore, we seek to disseminate tactile Libras in a technical way so that Deafblind people have access to country music, as well as linguistic accessibility and guaranteed access to culture and leisure. Furthermore, the work presents the different characteristics that we can find in the world of Deafblindness and increasingly provide cultural accessibility for this segment.

The study of the intentions of cultural images is highly relevant, as it is capable of provoking changes in individual and collective thinking. Cinema, with the help of its tools, represents several aspects of our culture and society, creating images that intend to explain our world. Thus, the purpose of this research is to demonstrate through an example of semiotic analysis how the media intentionally imagines and tries to represent a certain country and culture.

Although Dom Quixote, by Miguel de Cervantes, written in the 17th century, was quickly translated into many languages, the first authorial translation into European Portuguese, the Monumental Edition carried out by Cia Literária do Porto, only occurred in the 19th century. Monteiro Lobato based his Don Quixote das Crianças on it, in the early 20th century, bringing the character to the Brazilian children's universe. This work was translated twice into Buenos Aires Spanish. The main objective of this work is to reconstruct the paths and strategies used by authors/translators in the works that make up the corpus of this investigation. The research is structured into three blocks that address, firstly, the subsidies necessary for its complete understanding. Among them there are the theoretical subsidies from Translation Studies such as the Polysystem Theory, developed by Itamar Even-Zohar, and Descriptive Translation Studies, represented by Gideon Toury. Literary subsides are also included, introducing Miguel de Cervantes and Dom Quixote de la Mancha, as well as the Monumental Edition and its translators: Viscount of Castilho, Viscount of Azevedo and Pinheiro Chagas. The second block deals with the social and political contexts in which the work was written and translated, introducing the author, translator, and editor Monteiro Lobato, the work under study, as well as its translators into Buenos Aires Spanish: Benjamín de Garay and M. J. de Sosa. The third and final block uses the translation analysis outline developed by Antoine Berman, combined with the analysis and description model of translations created by Lambert and Van Gorp, with the aim of identifying the position occupied by the works that make up the corpus of the research in the Brazilian and Argentine literary systems in the early 20th century. Understanding Monteiro Lobato's literary and translational thinking, as well as his translators’ ones, and the context in which Children's Don Quixote was produced and translated aims to contribute to the history of translation in Brazil, understand the conception at the time of the translator's role and the role of translated literature in shaping of Brazilian and Argentine literary systems. Furthermore, it highlights the relevance of Monteiro Lobato, not only as an author but also as a translator, editor, and promoter of Brazilian literature abroad.

The imposition of the English language as norm of prestige during the British settling resulted in significant variations and changes in the English spoken in the colonized regions, originating new uses of the language. Therefore, the normative version was replaced by a discourse adapted to the places where the colonies had been established, as a recognition and appreciation of their own cultures and identities. The post-colonial literature emerged to question and deny concepts imposed by the imperial power, such as a standard linguistic code that should be privileged. One example of post-colonial literature is Kehinde (1994), written by the Nigerian writer Buchi Emecheta (1944-2017). This work intends to present a commented translation of Kehinde, investigate and answer which strategies of post-colonial literature are used by the author and how the linguistic and cultural aspects in the text could be translated. Thus, examples will be presented with excerpts from the translation compared to excerpts from the source text, with the aim of offering translation alternatives for Kehinde, in the Brazilian context. Furthermore, since post-colonial literature is not so translated, especially to Brazilian Portuguese, this work can contribute for future translations of postcolonial texts.
