SUMMARY:

This thesis comprises three essays in applied microeconomics.

 The first chapter investigates the impact of tourism on educational outcomes. To establish causality, an instrumental variable approach is employed. The main findings support the hypothesis that tourism enhances the GDP level and raises the opportunity cost of children studying.

 The second chapter explores the effects of tourism on public finance. Again, an instrumental variable approach is used to establish causality. The findings indicate that tourism enhances the fiscal autonomy of municipalities and is associated with improved infrastructure and more capable politicians.

The third chapter investigates the influence of political alignment on political variables during the Brazilian dictatorship. The primary results reveal no evidence of political alignment affecting electoral manipulation, public finance, and the provision of public goods.
