SUMMARY:

The general objective of the present work is to investigate the beliefs, emotions, and actions of teachers in initial education during an undergraduate degree course in Spanish in relation to their own Spanish language learning after passing through a situation of emergency remote teaching. To achieve the general objective, this work has three specific objectives: 1) investigate the beliefs and actions of teachers in initial teacher education in relation to their own Spanish language learning; 2) identify the emotions of teachers undergoing initial education concerning their Spanish language learning; 3) verify the relationship between the beliefs, emotions, and actions of teachers in initial education participating in the research in relation to their own Spanish language learning. This work is based on Barcelos (2001, 2004, 2006a, 2006b, 2007, 2013), Conceição (2004), Horwitz (1985, 1987), Kalaja (1995), Kalaja et al. (2016), Mukai (2014), Oxford (1990), Pajares (1992), Ramos (2011), Vieira-Abrahão (2004), Wenden (1987, 1998, 1999), Woods (2003), among others, in their theoretical contribution to research in beliefs and actions; and on affective factors, emotions, and feelings, it is based on Aragão (2005, 2011), Arnold (1998, 2011), Arnold and Brown (1999), Barcelos (2015), Damásio (2012, 2015), Dörnyei (1994), Mastrella-de-Andrade (2011, 2011a), Maturana (2009, 2014), Ramos (2020), Stevick (1999), among others. The study is based on the qualitative-interpretative paradigm and its method is the case study, using the contextual approach to belief studies. This study was carried out with four Spanish teachers undergoing initial teacher education during a degree in Letters (Spanish) course at the Federal Institute of Brasília. The instruments for data collection were the mixed questionnaire, self-report and semi-structured interview. The results of this research showed, in general, that the survey participants believe that there was little to no Spanish language learning during the period of emergency remote teaching and that this is due to fatigue and the high demand for activities and work during the period. Thus, they believe that they used the time only to meet the deadlines for the delivery of activities and not to learn the language. They also pointed out dissatisfaction with the teaching methodologies used in the classes, which demotivated them. It was possible to observe that beliefs and emotions were linked, but it was impossible to tell which came first; and they influenced the actions taken by the participants throughout the emergency remote instruction and the later return to face-to-face Spanish education.
