SUMMARY:

The accelerated growth in the number of incarcerated people has increased all over the world, and is no different in Latin America, including Brazil. Mass incarceration generates a complexification of this system. The general objective of this study is to identify the role of women in the illicit drug market, based on the narratives of incarcerated women. The interviews (to be) carried out in the “El Buen Pastor” women's prison in Bogotá - Colombia are compared to the interviews in the Distrito Federal Women's Prison, emphasizing and debating ruptures and continuities in women's social positions within a historical construction.  The relationship between gender and social position in organizations (family, social, employment) and in the illicit drug market is problematized, investigating the possible social positions of women in illicit conduct. The work seeks to reflect on the Latin American context surrounding the complexity of this phenomenon through experiences located in Bogotá in Colombia and the Federal District in Brazil.

The aim is to demonstrate that the phenomenon of an increase in the number of women criminalized for drug trafficking arises from a double context of war against them, in which the state criminalizes them due to their incarceration in the name of drug trafficking and the inadequacy of prisons. From a methodological point of view, the research will be descriptive with a qualitative approach, using comparative methodology as a strategy, since its importance lies in the conceptual categories constructed and developed to explain the phenomenon and the extent to which these explanations correlate with ideological and cultural causes. The choice of prisons is appropriate to the proposed methodology, as these are countries fighting a war on drugs, and life behind bars in Colombian prisons, as well as in Brazil, is considered to be one of the most difficult. The area of knowledge is Social Science studies on minorities, incarceration and the drug market, combined with the theoretical perspective of gender. The theoretical data will be interpreted from field studies, in which we will seek to capture explanations and interpretations, taking into account socio-historical observations, interdisciplinary study, allowing us to analyze the war on drugs and how it affects women, entering the theoretical frontiers of Law and Social Sciences. The comparative perspective aims to bring together and contrast the different realities between Brazil and Colombia.
