SUMMARY:

The main objective of this work is to analyze agrarian extractivism, the exploration and appropriation of land as a means of creating wealth in Matopiba. All this based on the understanding of what are the main wealth-forming activities in the region, how agrarian extractivism occurs and what its effects and consequences are. The main tool for this investigation is direct observation of the region and interviews with relevant actors. All reflection is based on the understanding that rural areas have not escaped the transformations brought about by the neoliberal world. The main objective of production is less and less to supply the population with food and more to create possibilities for negotiations in the financial market. The commodities market is one of the main vectors of this process. When thinking about commodities in Brazil, one region has become increasingly prominent: Matopiba. Matopiba is a region formed by a large portion of the Cerrado and a small part that comprises the Amazônia Legal (Legal Amazon) and that involves the entire territory of Tocantins, most of Maranhão, western Bahia and southern Piauí. The most recent agricultural frontier opened in the country brings with it all the contradictions of previous frontiers and does not escape the logic of agrarian extractivism. The region is deeply marked by inequality. The production of wealth and the expansion of well-being are not directly related. Such inequality seems to be one of the consequences of the concentration and accumulation of wealth and land characteristic of Matopiba. Recently, the growing interest of sectors that originally had no connection with agriculture has been highlighted. These sectors are increasingly attracted by the appreciation they can see from their investments. This is the case of real estate agents, investment funds and companies that promote environmental services. It is in investigating how these phenomena of agrarian extractivism operate that this work focuses.
