SUMMARY:

Deforestation in the Legal Amazon is a chronic problem, driven by the advance of agriculture and demographic pressure since the 1970s, with serious consequences for ecosystem balance and human well-being. Although policies such as the PPCDAm contributed to reducing deforestation rates between 2004 and 2012, changes in environmental policy and the dismantling of control instruments during the years 2019-2022 led to a worrying increase in rates. In 2023 there is a change in environmental policy compared to previous years, suggesting a reconstruction. The aim of this study is to understand the conditions for dismantling and rebuilding command and control policies for deforestation control in the Amazon, based on the actions of the top environmental bureaucracy. The research is a comparative case study and will be carried out using the difference method, analyzing causal theories that lead to the results in question: the dismantling of the policy and a possible reconstruction.
