SUMMARY:

Biodiversity conservation in unstable climate scenarios requires the identification of the most vulnerable populations. However, studies that integrate both physiology and population genomics to elucidate ecological and evolutionary mechanisms in natural ecosystems remain scarce. In this study, we will approach the genomics of thermal physiology with gene flow of the Leptodactylus group, a genus of frogs distributed in the Americas. We hypothesize that connected populations show less local adaptation, as it is believed that a wide geographic distribution in a variety of habitats is able to camouflage selection signals. We will also investigate how demographic responses induced by past climatic events have shaped the genetic and thermal variations of current populations. Here, Leptodactylus populations that suffered population declines present genomic vulnerability negatively correlated with temperature, assuming that genetic erosion promotes physiological limitation in performance and thermal tolerance. Lastly, we will investigate the evolutionary rescue potential and range changes of the species Leptodactylus labyrinthicus in future climate scenarios. The potential for evolutionary rescue will be lower in regions with greater pressures from habitat modification and reduced populations. Our hypotheses will be tested using population genetics methods, multivariate analysis and environmental modeling, in order to elucidate the influence of geographic, historical and ecological factors on the genomic structure of the thermal physiology of neotropical amphibians.
