SUMMARY:

Coloration and body size, along with other aspects, are related to thermoregulation and anti-predatory strategies. Regarding thermoregulation, larger organisms with darker coloration may have an advantage in drier and colder environments or during times of lower air temperature, such as dusk and early morning, while smaller and lighter organisms may have more advantages in hotter environments or during hotter times of the day. Additionally, size can directly influence the coloration pattern and consequently the effectiveness of the anti-predatory strategy. For example, animals with more conspicuous coloration can benefit from larger sizes because the visibility of the signal would increase, thus deterring predators. Furthermore, depending on the type of location, size, and quantity, the patterns that make up the different strategies can play a role in intimidating predators or directing attacks, as is the case with eyespots. In this thesis, we will focus on the adaptive function of anti-predatory strategies and thermoregulation in butterflies. In the first chapter, we aim to assess, through standardized photographs, whether there is a relationship between butterfly size and wing coloration patterns with environmental factors. In the second chapter, we intend to evaluate whether coloration and size patterns can reflect adaptations in resource usage throughout the day using spectrometry techniques and photography of butterflies captured in a cerrado environment. In the third chapter, we plan to evaluate the effectiveness of eyespots, an anti-predatory strategy found in butterflies and other organisms, through a meta-analysis. In the fourth chapter, we aim to study the relationship between body size evolution and aposematism in butterflies.
