SUMMARY:

Parental care can be defined as any effort made by parents to increase the survival of their offspring, but that in return diminishes their opportunities for future reproduction. An alternative way of parental strategy that seems less costly is brood parasitism. In this case, a female lays her eggs in another female's nest, thereby minimizing the costs of caring for her own chicks. This behavior has already been observed in many groups such as invertebrates, amphibians, fish, and most studied and well-described birds. The interaction between hosts and brood parasites can result in an intriguing system known as coevolution. On the one hand, hosts evolve defense strategies to minimize the costs of parasitism, which in turn lead to the evolution of counter-defense strategies in parasites and so on. One factor that deserves to be highlighted within this relationship between brood parasites and hostsis the time and level of interaction (virulence) between the two species. While parasites of older and more virulent systems are in more advanced stages of this arms race, parasites of newer and less virulent systems may not present the evolution of some of these strategies. The objective of this project research is to investigate several behavioral aspects of brood parasitism between Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) and its neotropical hosts. This project is divided into three chapters, and I intend to answer questions regarding, 1) host selection, 2) egg ejection and 3) nest defense. In the first chapter, I will evaluate the influence of the expression of secondary sexual characteristics on host selection. In the second chapter, I intend to evaluate whether hosts' morphological and life history traits are correlated with higher rates of egg ejection. Finally, In the third chapter, I will evaluate the nest defense behavior in a common and regularly parasitized host, Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus), in a tropical savannah of Central Brazil
