Revisiting Brazilian Portuguese Relative Clauses:
Parametric Change?
Relative clause; Diachronic syntax; Brazilian portuguese; Contact.
The study presents an ongoing investigation of a hypothesis about relative clause change in Brazilian Portuguese. Based on the concept of reanalysis (ROBERTS, 2007), proposes that the standard relative has been replaced by the chopping strategy. Therefore, it reviews formal approaches on the subject and presents ambiguous structures, considered as motivating the reanalysis, to which the topicalization structure is associated. It presents a database of 18th century relative clauses with preliminary statistical results and analysis of chosen variables. It points out as ways of following the investigation the expansion of the database, the investigation of the typology of the relatives and the possibility of the substract effect, caused by the intense contact of Brazilian Portuguese with African languages.
