SUMMARY:

The theme of this study, iconicity in the creation of academic term-signs in Brazilian Sign Language - BSL, is inserted in the concentration area of Linguistic Theory and Analysis, specifically in the Lexicon and Terminology research line of the Postgraduate Program in Linguistics - PPGL at the Department of Linguistics, Portuguese, and Classical Languages - LIP of the University of Brasília - UnB. In this research, we postulate that the individual's mental abstraction - motivated by cultural aspects, bodily, conceptual experiences, or usage context - can be fundamental factors for the iconic features of the sign to be recognized, categorized, and assimilated so that the phenomenon of iconicity occurs. Therefore, through qualitative and descriptive approaches, we investigate the cognitive processes inherent in the individual's conceptual abstractions motivating the production of term-signs in BSL that relate to the occurrence of iconicity and propose a methodological model for analyzing iconicity based on the studies of Taub (1997, 2001), Wilcox (1992, 1993, 1995, 1998a, 1998b, 2000, 2001, 2002a, 2002b, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, and 2013), and Faulstich (1993, 1995a, 1995b, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020a, 2020b), in order to meet the proposed objective of analyzing the role of iconicity in the process of creating academic term-signs produced by deaf and non-deaf researchers at the Lexical and Terminological Studies Center - Lexterm Center - of the University of Brasília - UnB. As it is a proposal for investigating a phenomenon - iconicity - that requires a better understanding of the levels of complexity in which it presents, we intend to clarify that the proximity between form and meaning is just the tip of the iceberg, as we identify indications that there are differences between the visible categories (form and representation of form) and invisible (cognitive conceptualizations) of the sign, perceived or created, that relate in a complementary way to the construction of meaning of the term-sign.
