SUMMARY:

This ethnographic work is based on the concepts of Sociolinguistics by Labov (2008), Bagno (2017), Vellasco and Sousa (2007) and Bortoni-Ricardo (2022, 2014, 2008), Dell Hymes (1964), Fishman ( 1972), Gonçalves (2018), Grupioni (2006), Hanks (2008), Kriegl (2002), Moita Lopes (2006), and others. It aims to analyze the process of transition from the mother tongue to the standard norm of students in the 6th year of elementary school, residents of the Kalunga Vão de Almas Community, Coco Farm, Cavalcante-GO. Socially, the residents of Fazenda Coco, in general, speak a variety of languages different from other locations and suffer linguistic prejudice because they are a minority and because part of the people at Fazenda Coco are illiterate. The research also seeks to disclose that this different way people pronounce the word constitutes a linguistic variety, however, it is not considered by sociolinguistics as a “wrong” speech. This linguistic phenomenon, which occurs in the speeches of the inhabitants of the community, is a characteristic that is part of our culture and our identity. This is because we have a so-called “standard” language to be followed and, therefore, we cannot use the same language that we use everywhere and in all contexts. This means that we need to recognize the linguistic varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, including the variety from Fazenda Coco, valuing people's way of speaking, and even study this variety as we intend to do in this work. On the other hand, we can teach the prestige norm of the BP to the young people in the community and find out how this process takes place. For this, my research will use the ethnographic basis for data generation. With the result of the work, I intend to collaborate with the training of teachers protected in sociolinguistics who can have a sensitive practice in dealing with the linguistic variation of their students and also who can produce didactic material for Kalunga Schools.
