SUMMARY:

This research begins with the aim of offering a reflection on Jewish immigration into Brazilian territory and the assumption that the set of first names in use could be affected by this migratory movement. Thus, we question whether it would be possible, based on census data, to differentiate first names of Hebrew origin when related to the Judeo-Christian tradition inherited from colonization from those first names, also of Hebrew origin, but which would have a direct relationship with the population of Jewish immigrants in Brazil. ; thus being able to reach, albeit in a preliminary way, the contribution of names of Hebrew origin to the Brazilian anthroponymic scenario. Mapping Jewish immigration in Brazil, according to Decol (2001), is work yet to be done, because, unlike other migrant groups, such as Japanese, Italians and Poles, the Jews who moved to Brazil came from different countries, above all, from Europe, although we can talk about migration from the Middle East, especially after the creation of the State of Israel. Therefore, investigating the consequences of Jewish anthroponymy in Brazil is still quite challenging, not only because the presence of these first names involves factors of a socio-historical nature, but also because it implies aspects of the cultural affiliation of individuals to their tradition as opposed to an option for integration into Brazilian society through the use of first names more in keeping with Brazilianness.
