SUMMARY:

Titanium implants have a long history of success in replacing teeth and bone joints. Afew years ago, zirconia implants were introduced. To study the interactionof undifferentiated mesenchymal cells transforming into osteoblasts and promotingosseointegration, three experiments were conducted: Initially, titaniumand zirconiasamples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy. Then, human dental pulpmesenchymal cells were placed in contact with titanium and zirconia discs for invitrocell viability assay by indirect cytotoxicity method WST-1 , and placed in osteoblasticdifferentiation medium (HM) for in vitro osteoinduction assay at a distance. The invitroosteoinduction assay by contact used undifferentiated mesenchymal cells fromhumanlipoaspirate cultured in DMEM-low glucose medium on the three different discs. Titanium and zirconia discs did not affect cell growth, indicating low toxicity tocells. Alizarin red staining identified osteoblastic differentiation at both 7 and 14 days of culture. Simple contact between mesenchymal cells from lipoaspirate culturedinDMEM-low did not trigger bone secretion onto the discs. It was evidenced that titaniumand zirconia surfaces are not toxic to undifferentiated mesenchymal cells and titaniumand zirconia extracts possess properties that favor cellular differentiation towards anosteogenic phenotype.
