SUMMARY:

Genetics is essential for understanding heredity and observable characteristics have historically triggered several social problems, such as racism and the exclusion of individuals considered not “fit”. These social problems have long been based on a pseudoscience called eugenics, which implicitly influences the teaching of genetics to this day. Curriculum documents provide for the teaching of genetics considering the historical factors of social segregation within science and teaching with an investigative approach, but on many occasions the materials available for teachers to use in their classes do not meet these aspects. Therefore, it is necessary to develop teaching resources that are unrelated to eugenics and that demonstrate the real complexity of the inheritance of skin color. The general objective of the present work was to evaluate how skin color genetics is dealt with in available textbooks and teaching materials, especially in Portuguese. As products, a review article was generated on the genetics of the heart of the skin and the social issues, racism and eugenics, which can be worked on when discussing this characteristic and a survey of how the inheritance of this characteristic is described in the textbooks modified in the high school approved by the National Textbook Program (2021).
