SUMMARY:

Education should empower citizens to develop a wide range of essential competencies and skills. In the context
of Biology education, it is crucial that students are taught in a way that enables them to relate the content learned
to everyday situations and use this knowledge effectively to solve real-world problems. However, teaching
scientific concepts, particularly in the area of Genetics, faces numerous challenges, as it encompasses a complex
set of abstract knowledge that is often difficult to understand. To facilitate the teaching and learning process, it
is necessary to adopt practices that enable the comprehension of the basic principles of heredity. Using human
characteristics makes the content more engaging and contextualized. This study addresses gustatory sensitivity
to Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) in Genetics education, through scientific knowledge of the variation in individual
taste sensitivity and its relation to aspects of nutrition and health. The study of this characteristic was conducted
through a literature review to understand how it is approached in Genetics education. Based on this survey,
documents were selected according to their alignment with current scientific knowledge about the genetic bases
that explain part of the variation in taste sensitivity and were analyzed for their alignment with the competencies
and skills outlined in the BNCC. Given the overall panorama, didactic material was developed as the product of
the Master’s Thesis (TCM), in the form of a Case Study with an investigative approach. The main feature of this
material is to enable students to understand the basic concepts of Genetics and their relations with
biotechnological aspects and applications in society, regarding taste perception in nutrition and health. An
important aspect of the Case Study is the possibility of integrating knowledge of Genetics and Epigenetics. A
second product of the TCM was a review article on how the characteristic of “PTC Taste Sensitivity” is addressed
in Genetics education, written based on the analysis of documents (Proceedings of the IX National Meeting of
Biology Teaching / VII Regional Meeting of Biology Teaching MG/GO/TO/DF 2024).
