New Upper Secondary Education System; Curriculum; Large Scale Assessment; BNCC; Biology Teaching.
This research stems from the restlessness concerning recent changes to Brazilian High Schools, developments in the curriculum, skills and lessons regarding Natural Sciences, with an emphasis on Biology. This paper aims to promote the investigation of the objectives and results of the Diagnostic Assessments of Elementary and Middle School Biology Classes and the difficulties and obstacles of the Biology teachers in this new education system. Based on the ENEM exam (the national High School exam) and the pedagogical interpretation of its reports from 2009 to 2012, the result of this investigation was the creation of an extension course for the biology teachers. This course has allowed us to reflect on the assessments of education on a national or even international scale, create ways of interpreting the relationship between Biology questions and what the results of these assessments show, and offer a view grounded on inquiry -based teaching to work on the analysis and formulation of biology questions.
