SUMMARY:

This research stems from concerns revolving around recent changes in the Brazilian upper secondary education system, content development, skills and learning about Natural Sciences, with emphasis on Biology. The intention is to promote the investigation of the objectives and results of the Diagnostic Assessments of Basic Education in Biology and of difficulties and confrontations faced by Biology teachers in this new education system. Based on ENEM (abbreviation for National Upper Secondary Education Exam) reports from 2009 to 2012, this investigation will produce a booklet with the analysis and interpretation of items from biological themes found and an extension course for Biology teachers. The course will aim to inform what large-scale assessments and exams are, create ways of interpreting the relationship between Biology items and what the results of these assessments show, and offer a view grounded on inquiry-based teaching to work the analysis of items from biological themes.
