EDUCATION

KEY WORDS:

Riparian Forests

PAGES: 40
BIG AREA: Outra
AREA: Ciências Ambientais
SUMMARY:

The environmental challenges currently faced require a more integrated collective
thinking and abreast of environmental issues, due to its multifactorial character an equally dynamic
approach is necessary, the confrontation of environmental problems necessarily involves the
reformulation of majority thinking, such a process has as an important ally the school, which, once based
on Freirian principles, can and should contribute significantly to the construction of a critically thinking and
active individual in changing his/her reality. Because there will be no sustainable development without an
education for sustainable development. In a sample and operational analysis of the curriculum and
elementary school textbooks used at the State Department of Education of the Federal District (SEEDF), it
can be observed that the approach to ecological themes focuses on terrestrial ecosystems. Little is said
about the functioning of freshwater ecosystems, such as rivers and lakes, streams and floodplains, as well as the function of riparian forests, given that such environments are among the most threatened

ecosystems, and streams are extremely diverse and highly threatened environments, with fish extinction
rates considered higher than those verified for terrestrial organisms, the teaching of Environmental
Sciences must develop in the student the ability to solve problems and take a political stand. In addition,
what is taught must be closely linked to its reality, the present work develops a teaching strategy through
the formulation, implementation and validation of a didactic model and a didactic sequence about riparian
forests and freshwater ecosystems, using research-based teaching as a methodology, constituting a critical
environmental education strategy about these environments.
