Managing assets of research projects: an investigation from the institutional work perspective.
asset management; movable property; institutional work
This research explores the management of movable assets acquired through research projects at the University of Brasília. The primary objective was to identify and understand the institutional work performed by staff at the Movable Assets Coordination Office, specifically how this work is structured within the context of managing these assets. The study adopts the institutional work approach (Lawrence & Suddaby, 2006) as its theoretical framework, analyzing how organizational actors create, maintain, or transform institutional practices. The investigation was guided by specific objectives, involving the analysis of practices adopted by the Coordination Office staff, the review of institutional documents and the identification of challenges in management processes. This qualitative case study relied on semi-structured interviews with staff from the Directorate of Materials Management, the Directorate of Purchases, and the Dean's Office of Research and Innovation, as well as an analysis of twenty administrative processes recorded in the Electronic Information System. Data analysis, supported by ATLAS.ti software and based on Saldaña's (2013) coding methodology, facilitated the identification of themes and categories that informed the analysis and interpretation. As a technical-technological product, the research presents a technical report that compiles normative information, describes current procedures, and proposes recommendations for their enhancement. The findings highlight the role of staff as institutional agents and underscore the need for formalizing and standardizing procedures, as well as implementing initiatives focused on training and information dissemination. This research contributes to the practical application of institutional work theory and provides valuable insights for strengthening asset management within the University
