SUMMARY:

Since the dawn of humanity, leadership has played a fundamental role in our evolution and progress. Inspirational leaders have emerged at different historical moments, guiding communities and nations toward great achievements. From this perspective, the present study aimed to identify, based on the perception of staff members at the University of Brasília (UnB), the possible relationships between the leadership style adopted by managers and the degree of adoption of managerial innovations. Grounded in classical and contemporary leadership theories with emphasis on the transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire (absence of leadership) models the study highlights the importance of leadership in promoting innovative environments. The research adopted a quantitative approach, using questionnaires administered to teaching and administrative staff at the University of Brasília. Data were processed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 28. The results indicated that both transformational and transactional leadership styles are positively associated with the adoption of managerial innovations, with transformational leadership showing the strongest correlation. In contrast, the absence of leadership was found to hinder this process. The findings also revealed weaknesses in the cultural support for innovation, along with challenges such as the need to strengthen the organizational climate, train leaders, overcome institutional fragmentation, and expand staff participation in decision-making processes. As a technical-technological product, the study proposes the development of a training course focused on building transformational leadership competencies among university managers, aiming to strengthen a culture of innovation in public administration.
