SUMMARY:

This graduate monograph discusses the process of teaching-learning music to individuals with visual impairment. It aims to understand how individuals with adventitious blindness and low eyesight describe their musical learning in a formal context of music teaching. The specific objectives intend to identify which activities and practices these students consider relevant to their learning process. As well as to understand how they justify this relevance, understand the challenges these students notice in their musical learning process and the strategies they use to make their musical learning process more manageable. The research explores a qualitative approach, an exploratory and empirical investigation carried out during the pandemic isolation through remote lessons and interviews. Participant observation, field diary, semi-structured interviews, and memory stimulation interviews generated the data. Participated in this study four individuals, three of them adventitious blind and one with low eyesight, students from Centro de Educação Profissional Escola de Música de Brasília's Resource Room. The research results suggest that, although the remote interaction, the teaching-learning musical process became efficient through listening and auditory identification, movement description, gestures and positions for phrase execution, melodic-rhythmical motives, and music description.
Furthermore, the participants reveal that the practices that privilege the body (movement, touch, hearing) are the ones that most closely approach their educational needs. The challenges are related to attitudinal barriers, lack of inclusive pedagogical practices, and inadequate materials. The results show that their studies' strategies are constructing mental images, body movements, recordings, musical instruments, associations with images, gestures, and attentive and focused listening.
