SUMMARY:

Libraries are increasingly becoming an important training space for the development of information competence, which is a set of knowledge, skills and attitudes for the search and use of information to generate knowledge. As a fundamental competence for evidence-based health practices, it is in charge of boosting this and several other practices and literacies necessary in today's society, in order to increase the cultural repertoire of individuals and learning networks, subsidizing their actions and acting in a conscious manner, grounding individual and collective decisions, enabling social transformation. The general objective of the work was to analyze and understand the practices of search and use of information developed by the academic community of the University of Brasilia (UnB), Faculdade de Ceilândia (FCE), in view of the development of a technical product, an educational program of information competence for the Health area. It is proposed, therefore, a self-assessment of the competence in information of the academic community of FCE, seeking to analyze and diagnose the main difficulties and needs of information search and use. Thus, using this panorama as the main subsidy for planning the proposal of a program consisting of educational mediations to be offered by the FCE Library. Therefore, we chose a research strategy in the form of a case study of the academic community in the health area of the FCE. The research sample was non-probabilistic and intentional, represented by students, professors, and administrative technicians who seek or requested educational mediations from the FCE Library during the 2nd academic semester of 2022 at UnB (Oct. 2022 to Feb. 2023). The instrument chosen and developed for data collection was the semi-structured online questionnaire, based among other documents, mainly by the Information Competence Standards for Higher Education of 2000 and the Framework for Information Competence for Higher Education of 2016 of the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL), applied on a voluntary basis to the participants of the mediations. The total number of participants in the educational mediations (invited) was 282 and the total number of participants was 178, with a response/participation rate of 63.1%. The result of the research presents a synthesis of the diagnosis of the frequency and self-assessment of the competence in information with which the analysis categories Undergraduate (students) and Postgraduate (teachers and technicians) use techniques, standards, providers, sources and information technologies for the preparation of academic and scientific work. The results pointed out in general that the participants have good knowledge and skills in using search engines, open access information sources and the use of ABNT norms. However, they present knowledge gaps and difficulties in the elaboration and evaluation of the research question, elaboration of search strategies with Boolean operators, use of controlled vocabularies, evidence-based health information sources, restricted access multidisciplinary information sources, use of bibliographic and review managers, and difficulty in using international standards for scientific writing.
