Music contributions for premature baby and caregiver during the admission period in the neonatal ICU

Studies highlight music as a facilitating factor during the hospitalization process for premature babies. Thus, this is a case study on the effects of music on the interaction between the mother and her premature baby throughout the period of hospitalization in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a public hospital in the city of Brasília. The research seeks to compare indicators of interactions between the baby and the mother and the baby’s physiological reactions at two different moments, the first with lullaby music and the second with the mother's choice of music. Video-recorded observation was used and the analysis took place with the aid of the ELAN software, in order to be carried out in a microgenetic way. The baby was equally calm after music interventions, but a better response was observed in the pattern of behavioral responses after the second intervention. Finally, the fact that a single case was presented in this study does not allow for an exhaustive understanding of the contributions of interventions with different music styles, but it was evident how beneficial the application of music in NICUs can be.
