SUMMARY:

Built between 1969 and 1976, the Honestino Guimarães Bridge, previously named Costa e Silva, or Monumental Bridge as Oscar Niemeyer himself baptized it, is the only Special Work of Art (OAE) by the renowned architect designed and executed. Until its completion, this OAE underwent changes in its construction system, since the original project considered the bridge to be built entirely in progressive cantilevers of prestressed concrete, both side spans (110 m) and central spans (220 m). After an incident with the prestressing cables that occurred in 1971, an adaptation was made to the initial project, replacing a 58-meter-long central section with an orthotropic metallic structure. In addition, in 1985, the bridge now has three lanes (originally there were two) and two pipelines under the side pedestrian walkways. In this context, considering the use of this public equipment and the effects of time, which can interfere with the dynamic behavior of the structures, continuous remote dynamic monitoring of the central span of the bridge is being carried out, within the scope of a master's thesis. Then, after building a finite element numerical model for the central span in a metallic structure, it will be updated based on the modal properties (natural frequencies and vibration modes). This will support the performance of a dynamic analysis with an American Standard Fatigue Vehicle (AASHTO) and identification of critical details of the welded structure, and respective estimation of the fatigue damage by the Accumulated Damage Method. The objective of this master's thesis is to analyze the accumulated damage in welded connections, in order to contribute to possible structural interventions in the metallic structure, in addition to analyzing the structural integrity with regard to the fatigue limit state.
