SUMMARY:

The cost estimating process involves gathering various information and varies based on the approaches and methods of each professional. Additionally, it is traditionally manual and particularly labor-intensive in the task of quantity surveying or quantity take-off. The automation of this task is one of the main advantages of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for 5D. However, the literature suggests guidelines for the adoption of BIM as a support tool for estimators, who must enter manual inputs considering a complete Development to na cost estimate and conduct quality reviews on data from BIM models. Given the inherent difficulties in the BIM process for budget development (access, data manipulation, and interoperability issues), the scope of this work involves the development of an artifact to support estimators. The chosen approach for constructing this artifact is based on Design Science Research (DSR) methodology and is segmented into three stages: understanding the problem, artifact development, and artifact validation. The understanding of the problem was structured based on a systematic literature review and interviews with experts. The development aims to create a verification process for IFC4 models through the construction of scripts (or routines) using the python language, as well as to produce preliminary manuals for the artifact's use. Finally, the proposed validation relies on tests with experts and reviews of the usage manuals. The results discuss the progress of the research concerning the first stage, which involves the systematic literature review. It was possible to analyze that the methodology should enable professionals to optimize their own processes for checking BIM model information, as the tools used (IFC4 and the python language) are aligned with the open development of quantity extraction methods.
