SUMMARY:

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most prevalent cancer in childhood,
and in recent decades there has been great progress in understanding the biology of the
disease and its treatment. The disease, once considered fatal, now has a cure rate of 90% in
the best centers. The medications used lead to immunosuppression, which increases the risk
of infectious complications. Vaccination is extremely important in this population to prevent
infectious complications. In this project, a prospective cohort study, we will evaluate the
reconstitution of the immune system, the loss of vaccine protection, and the immune response
to revaccination with the yellow fever vaccine, post-chemotherapy treatment of acute
lymphoblastic leukemia in children aged 1 to 18 years at the Hospital da Criança de Brasília
José Alencar from December 2022 to December 2024. We will assess the subpopulations of
naive and memory T and B lymphocytes, Natural Killer cells, follicular T lymphocytes, and
neutralizing antibodies to the yellow fever vaccine at the end of treatment, and at 3, 6, and 12
months post-chemotherapy.
