SUMMARY:

According to the World Health Organization, over 620 million COVID-19 cases have been confirmed worldwide, affecting several dengue-endemic regions, raising concerns about the impact of coinfections with the dengue (DENV) and SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Brazil has registered more than 34 million SARS-CoV-2 infections and over 2.3 million dengue cases, with coinfection cases already reported in the literature. To evaluate how a coinfection might affect patient metabolic profile when compared to individual SARS-CoV-2 and DENV infections, a total of 176 samples, including mild COVID-19, severe COVID-19, dengue and coinfection cases, together with healthy controls, were collected from three public hospitals in the Federal District of Brazil and submitted to UHPLC-MS/MS analysis. The raw data obtained is currently undergoing preprocessing using MZmine3 and compound annotation will be performed using databases such as the GNPS – Global Natural Products Molecular Networking. Based on these analyses, this study aims to identify a molecular signature capable of distinguishing between the abovementioned groups and hopefully contribute to treatment, patient care, especially differential diagnosis, since the clinical presentation of COVID-19 and dengue can be very similar with standardized antibody-based diagnostic tests often misleading due to crossreactivity.
