SUMMARY:

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that has increased in recent years. In dermatology,
many immunosuppressive drugs are to treat diseases such as psoriasis and the real impact on
neglected or re-emerging infectious diseases, such as syphilis, has not been properly studied.
The objective is to evaluate the syphilis prevalence by: 1) PCR for T. pallidum DNA and 2)
treponemal and non-treponemal serological tests (FTA-abs and VDRL) in the serum of patients
with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis in treatment with biologicals or non-biological
immunosuppressive drugs at the University Hospital of Brasília. A total of 180 patients were
included, 92 were on biological treatment and 88 were on methotrexate. Of these, 1 patient
tested positive for Ureaplasma urealyticum on Multiplex PCR for STI; 1 tested positive for FTA-
abs IgG and VDRL at 1:4 titer; and 4 had positive FTA-abs IgG, all on biological treatment for
psoriasis. We intend to increase the number of subjects included in the study.
