BIG AREA: Ciências da Saúde

SUMMARY:

Resumo em Inglês: The relationship between marijuana uses and suicide is still not so clear. Some studies report that the use of this drug increases the risk of suicide while other studies show that the use of cannabis can minimize the possibility of a person committing suicide. OBJECTIVE: To verify the association between cannabis use and suicide. METHOD: had two parts. In the first, an overview with the objective of synthesizing the evidence from the literature on the relationship between cannabis use and suicide, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt. The search will be carried out in seven electronic databases. Eligibility criteria will be all systematic reviews that assess the relationship between cannabis use and suicide, suicidal ideation or suicide attempt, regardless of the eligibility criteria of the study subjects. The second part comprised an analytical cross-sectional population-based study, with all individuals who committed suicide in the Federal District, between 2011 and 2018. The data came from the Death Certificates, collected through the Mortality Information System (SIM), from the Occurrence Bulletins of the Civil Police of the Federal District and the Corpus Delict Examination Reports of the Institute of Legal Medicine. Data analysis was performed using the prevalence ratio (gross and adjusted), with respective confidence intervals at 95% and a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: They will be presented in the form of 2 articles: 1) Overview article entitled: “Relationship between cannabis use and suicide, suicidal ideation and suicide attempt: an overview and metaanalyses”, expected to be completed by February 2023. 2) Observational article entitled “Factors associated with cannabis use in people who committed suicide in the Federal District”, which showed that the characteristics that were associated with the use of this drug in suicide were the age group from 12 to 18 years old, being single /widowed/divorced, having committed a crime and being dependent on alcohol or other drugs and concomitant use with cocaine and barbiturates. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this research demonstrate that several factors are associated with cannabis use moments before and/or during the act of suicide, signaling an important public health problem.
