SUMMARY:

An increase in the prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) among young individuals has been observed worldwide, indicating the need for global efforts to improve the sexual and reproductive health of this population. Teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to these infections. Many STI are asymptomatic and may not be identified and treated. The aim of this study is to assess knowledge about STI and investigate sexual behavior among graduate students in Distrito Federal, Brazil. The research is descriptive, transversal, quantitative and is being carried out in two Universities: one private and the other public. Students aged ≥ 18 years and ≤ 29 years, regularly enrolled in one of the Universities, were selected through an electronic draw and received a video by email explaining the research and inviting them to participate. After signing the Informed Consent Form, they had access to the data collection instrument, available in the REDCap tool - Research Electronic Data Capture. Data extracted from REDCap were analyzed using the R program. Of the total number of participants (141), 130 had their responses analyzed. Of these, 83 (64%) students were from the public university and 47 (36%) from the private one; 51.5% were enrolled 1st to 4th. semester of the course and 48.5% in the 5th. semester or more. Among the respondents, 102 (78.4%) were female and 28 (21.6%) were male; the majority declared themselves white (n= 69; 53%); the most frequent age group was 20 to 24 years old (n= 75, 59%). 86.7% of students reported having had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, 38.8% with more than one sexual partner; 34.3% with casual partners; and 41.8% with people they met through the internet. As for the use of psychoactive substances, the most reported was alcohol; 55 (42.3%) believe that the use of alcohol can lead to unprotected sex and 19 (14.6%) reported having already had unprotected sex under the influence of alcohol. 100% of students have internet access; 17.1% use a relationship app; 77.8% seek to meet people and 88.8% prefer Tinder, of which 33.3% use the application daily. It is important to understand the behavior of young people facing STI in order to plan and implement interventions to prevent and control these infections.
