SUMMARY:

Resumo em inglês: Pain catastrophizing is characterized by a tendency to increase the value of the stimulus or threat of pain and to feel powerless in the context of pain. This is due to relative inability to inhibit pain-related thoughts in anticipation, during or after a painful event. Pain acts both in attracting our own attention and in that of others, whose responses may, in turn, influence those who have suffered the pain. This may be particularly important in the context of pediatric pain. Parental reactions are not always adaptive. Thus, it is important to understand which parents engage in specific behaviors such as reaction to their child's pain, why, and what the consequences might be. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the Pain Catastrophizing scale in mothers of newborns and to verify the possible neurobiological mechanisms correlated with the level of catastrophic symptoms, through salivary cortisol dosages, skin conductance activity and heart rate variability. As a specific objective, we will be able to evaluate possible differences between the catastrophic response of mothers who witness the painful event in their children and mothers who are not in direct contact at the moment of the event. Also, we can evaluate the effect of the mother presence in the stress reaction of the newborn. It is an observational, prospective study, controlled by the same individual, type before, during and after. This study will be conducted at the University Hospital of Brasília, following approval by the Ethics Committee of the University of Brasília. The subjects of the study will be 120 women in the mid-term puerperium (up to 2-3 days postpartum), who conceived ter healthy newborns and their newborns. The study hopes to find results that reinforce the correlation between catastrophic thoughts and physiological measures that measure pain. Other expected results are differences between the results of groups I and II, indicating a possible positive effect of the mother's presence during painful events in the neonate, both for the mother, reducing catastrophic thoughts, and for the neonate, actively reducing stress. If the expected results are found, a new clinical approach regarding the maternal presence during heel puncture and other procedures may be proposed.
