The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the virtopsy method associated with
biopsies of organs of interest (VABOI) to determine the cause of death at the Instituto Médico
Legal Leonídio Ribeiro-DF (IML-DF). The technique will be a variant of Minimally Invasive
Autopsy (MIA) as it will not include the angiography phase. With the association of external
necroscopic examination with tomography examination and guided biopsies of multiple
organs, it is expected to obtain effectiveness comparable to the traditional method in
determining the cause of death in deaths (suspicious death or possibly natural death) in IML-
DF. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out with corpses necropsied at IML-DF, in
the year 2021. 20 cases of deaths were included without a history to determine the cause of
death, whose tomography did not show mechanical trauma, whose circumstances of death
were indicative of natural death and whose legal representative has signed an informed
consent form authorizing the collection of samples. 10 cases underwent minimally invasive
necropsy and 10 cases underwent conventional necropsy, as a control group. 70%
determination of deaths was obtained in the MIA group and 80% determination in the control
group, a difference without statistical significance between the groups. The findings are
relevant, given that minimally invasive methods are not traditionally performed in developing
countries, and the technique under analysis could permanently modify the necropsy method in
the future. Therefore, the minimally invasive method becomes a possibility for necropsy in the
country's Legal Medical Institutes, allowing autopsy in a forensic context.
