SUMMARY:
Embroidery is a manifestation of material culture, strongly marked by ancestry, orality, femininity, domesticity, and precariousness. This is applied research, with descriptive and explanatory objectives, with qualitative approach, using methodological procedures of bibliographical research and semi-structured interviews with women embroiderers. It aimed to analyse the impact of embroidery executed by three associations of embroiderers to promote the autonomy of women in the artistic-cultural and political-feminist spheres, having design theories as a critical reference, with a feminist perspective. A bibliographical review was accomplished, as well as qualitative research, through interview with semi-structured questionnaires, applied to 19 women members of three associations of embroiderers. The study identifies that embroidery is recognized by embroiderers as a form of artistic manifestation, which generates a special creative pride and social recognition. For low-income women, embroidery brings a significant economic contribution, despite the low female wages. The artistic, social, and economic valorisation of women subverts the traditional feminine role, promoting women's capacity for agency. Manifestations of “embroidactivism” were recognized, a female political activism through embroidery. The embroidery circles encourage the creation of female support networks, becoming a sociotechnology of care among women, with potential for promoting feminist awareness. The study identified strategies of design for social inclusion, participative design, and emotional design. It sustains the relevance of thinking about design as a political process, which can be directed towards promoting the autonomy of historically excluded groups.
