SUMMARY:

This dissertation deals with Design as problem solving that makes use of different kinds of knowledge. This approach makes it possible to observe problems from different points of view. This research argues that traditional peoples have wisdom that needs to be documented, not only for the purpose of recognition and appreciation, but also because they can contribute to finding solutions to complex world problems. It proposes that humanbeings are directly related to materiality, and this relation can solve problems in at least two dimensions: producing materiality, or in a symbolic way, when new meanings are attributed to this materiality. This qualitative research makes use of extensive literature review to focus on the history and organization of the kalunga quilombolas. It is based on the assumption that the extensive relationship of the kalunga people with their territory allowed them to produce different kinds of knowledge.
