TITLE:
DESIGN AND SUSTAINABILITY: A STUDY ON REUSE, RECYCLING, AND DISPOSAL OF TEXTILE WASTE FROM CLOTHING

KEY WORDS:
Design for Sustainability, Solid Textile Waste, Clothing and Environment

PAGES: 132
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Desenho Industrial
SUMMARY:
The textile industry, over the centuries, has stood out as one of the most harmful to the environment, significantly contributing to the contamination of air, water, and soil and demanding extensive energy in its production and transportation. This study highlights the waste generated by the manufacturing process, especially when clothes become obsolete, both in the pre-consumption and post-consumption phases. Often, these wastes are directed to landfills, where they can persist for years, resulting in severe environmental and socio-economic impacts. Brazil stands out as a prominent producer of textile materials, generating approximately 170,000 tons of solid textile waste annually, of which about 80% are improperly disposed of in landfills. It is noteworthy that the clothing industry is the third-largest waste producer in the country. Given this scenario, design plays a crucial role in reshaping business models and actively promoting the transition to a sustainable economy. This research, using clothing as an investigative focus, seeks to reflect on and contribute to sustainable design, anchored in three main pillars: economic, social, and environmental. An extensive bibliographic analysis was conducted on international and national databases, as well as local investigations to contextualize the research. Adopting a qualitative and exploratory approach, the study emphasizes design's role in shifting paradigms, integrating sustainability into its practices. From a holistic perspective, design acts as a connecting link between different areas of knowledge, encouraging a transition towards a more sustainable world and catalyzing deep and lasting changes.
