SUMMARY:
The years 2020 to 2022 were marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. Two contemporary phenomena collided into an intersection in this period: the advance of depression as one of the most disabling diseases worldwide and the rise of the video games industry to a global entertainment market giant. People began to seek human connection and relief from depressive symptoms in games, using them as applied or even incidental therapeutic intervention. A systematic review designed a current scientific panorama on this topic, which revealed underutilized factors in coping strategies for depression such as the subjective relationships between players and games that transform virtual environments into therapeutic worlds. A theoretical-methodological repertoire has been sought to investigate such relations. Based on a netnographic approach, a sample of testimonials about games that help to deal with psychic suffering has been collected and the verbs analyzed, bearing in mind that in- game action creates the player's relationship. A Semiotic Web based on Nöth's Theory of Semiosis was then built to illustrate the relationships of significance perceived in the analysis and support a qualitative discussion. Psychology, Anthropology and Linguistics have been intertwined through Design, aiming to make the main object of the research — players with depression — into a subject that produces relevant knowledge about themselves and their condition. It is considered that adding this perspective to the corpus and the praxis can contribute to expand the understanding of the theme, to the development of practices and therapeutic games, and to the destigmatization of voices that suffer in silence. |
