SUMMARY:

Introduction: Severe hip fractures require surgical treatment, and most of them occur as a result of falls. Elderly people have an increased risk of further falls after surgery. There are clinical and gait parameters that may indicate a greater risk of further falls. Objectives: To characterize the gait of elderly people six months after surgery for a hip fracture, and evaluate whether there are differences in gait assessment, physical performance and functional status between the operated and non-operated lower limb and between different treatment groups; evaluate the influence of minor falls on the occurrence of postoperative falls within six months after surgery, and evaluate which factors influence the survival rates for a postoperative fall. Methods: Cross-sectional study that evaluated 45 older adults who underwent surgical treatment for a hip fracture due to a fall. The results of functional tests and spatio-temporal data from the three-dimensional gait assessment were
collected. Comparative analysis was made between operated and non-operated limb, and between the two groups of treatment: femoral nail and hip replacement. The occurrence of falls was also assessed before and after surgery. Results: Step width, single support time and stance period were shorter in the operated limb; there were no differences between treatment groups; the occurrence of minor falls before the hip fracture may increase the chance of a postoperative fall; the use of many medications, advanced age, depression and widowhood can increase the chance of falling; The survival rate from falling again after a hip fracture is statistically higher in patients with depression. Conclusions: Elderly fallers present changes in functional tests and threedimensional gait parameters, but do not differ in terms of the type of surgery performed. New falls can occur within six months after surgery, especially in older adults diagnosed with depression.
