SUMMARY:

In 2019, the new SARS-COV-2 emerged in China, a virus that, due to its rapid spread, caused the COVID-19 pandemic of recent years. Among the various symptoms already known, 40 to 60% of those affected present anosmia and dysgeusia. This fact occurs because the virus uses the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, present in cells in the nasal and oral mucosa, to enter the body, damaging supporting cells and affecting the sensory neurons of these structures. Although most individuals recover their sense of smell and taste after 4 weeks of infection, around 13% still have changes after months of COVID. Among the therapies described in the literature, olfactory training is the one with the greatest scientific evidence for treating olfactory disorders. Objective: To compare the sense of smell, taste and oral stereognosis of individuals with sequelae after COVID-19 before and after olfactory training. Methods: Individuals recovered from COVID-19 who have smell and/or taste complaints for more than 30 days after infection will be recruited, considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Initially, individuals will undergo anamnesis with the application of a qualitative questionnaire on smell (Portuguese version of the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders - Negative Statements - (bvQOD-NS)), and assessment of smell (PRO-FONO olfactory assessment and training instrument), taste (Taste Acuity Kit) and oral stereognosis (PRO-FONO Intraoral Stereognosis Instrument). During this period, the intervention will consist of carrying out olfactory training (Henkin, 1969), twice a day, for 8 weeks, with supervised weekly completion. The initial assessment will be repeated after 1 month and at the end of the intervention. Expected results: Individuals will present better scores in questionnaires and evaluation protocols for smell, taste and oral stereognosis after carrying out olfactory training
