SUMMARY:

The association between prematurity and changes in sensory processing is a trend pointed out in the literature. It is known that in premature infants, neurological development can be affected both in their structures and in their functions. The literature points out that changes in sensory processing have shown implications for motor, social and cognitive development, which may affect functional performance until adulthood. It is also known that breastfeeding has shown an important role in terms of reducing risks for development. It is questioned whether exclusive breastfeeding up to six months (EBF) has a positive relationship with better indicators of sensory processing and functional skills in children born prematurely. Objective: To investigate the association between exclusive breastfeeding (up to six months of age), sensory processing and functional skills of children born preterm between 12 and 18 months of chronological and corrected age. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, analytical and quantitative case-control study, in which the case group (G1) consisted of premature children who did not receive EB, and the control group (G2) consisted of premature children who received LOVE Breastfeeding history, sensory processing and functional skills of premature children were evaluated. Statistical tests were applied: Student's T and Mann Whitney's U, and Fisher's Chi-Square test to compare the results between the groups, in addition to Pearson's R test, to identify correlations. Results: There was no statistically significant difference for PS2 mean scores between groups (p>0.05 for all variables). However, the effect size for the variables. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in functional skills: Daily Activities: [t(21) = 1.55; p > 0.05]; Mobility: [t(21) = 1.05; p > 0.05]; Social/Cognitive: [t(21) = 0.85; p > 0.05]). However, there was a significant correlation between the mobility variables (PEDI-CAT) and the total duration of BF (r (23) = .529; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although the EB factor has not shown a statistically significant association in the performance of infants regarding functional skills and sensory processing, it was found that the longer duration of breastfeeding after six months of life was associated with better performance in the motor aspect of the children. infants.
