SUMMARY:

Introduction: Sarcopenia disease manifests the progressive loss of strength and muscle mass, compromising muscle quality and physical performance, especially in the elderly. The association of sarcopenia with cognitive impairment has already been observed in recent studies, but there are still uncertainties about the complex interaction of each of the clinical phenotypes of sarcopenia (low strength, muscle mass and physical performance) with cognitive impairment. Objectives: investigate an association between clinical phenotypes of sarcopenia and cognitive impairment and the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly people with and without cognitive impairment in those attending special care services. Methods: Cross-sectional analytical observational study, with a sample of 177 elderly people aged 60 years or over, obtained throught database collected between January and December 2020 in a special care service. Sarcopenia phenotypes were investigated by evaluating handgrip strength (HS) with a hydraulic dynamometer, measuring muscle mass inferred by calf circumference (CC) and evaluating physical performance identified in the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Elderly identified with low strength (HS <16Kgf for women and <27Kgf for men) and low muscle mass will be considered sarcopenic (CC<31cm) and severe sarcopenic those with sarcopenia and low physical performance (TUG>20s). To compare the phenotypes of sarcopenia and the diagnosis of sarcopenia among the elderly with and without cognitive impairment, the T-student test or similar non-parametric test for continuous data and the Chi-test for categorical data will be used. Rates verified using multiple and simple linear and logistic regression analyses. Expected results: It is expected to identify an association of sarcopenia and clinical sarcopenia phenotypes with cognitive impairment, and that elderly people with lower muscle mass and strength and worse physical performance are more likely to have cognitive impairment. Additionally, it is expected that the prevalence of sarcopenia is higher among elderly people with cognitive impairment when compared to elderly people without this impairment and that the relationship between the “muscle mass” phenotype and cognitive impairment is clarified.
