SUMMARY:

Introduction: The aging process promotes the increase of chronic diseases with low lethality and high morbidity, leading to the Brazilian scenario impacting factors for the sustainability of the economy and society. Difficulty swallowing is one such impact, affecting 1 in 17 people over the age of 60, with 300,000 to 600,000 new cases diagnosed each year. To identify elderly people with swallowing disorders, it is necessary to survey their prevalence in the community by tracking this health condition to establish measures or programs to prevent complications, morbidities and mortality. In hospitalized elderly, a clinical evaluation of swallowing comprises the survey of the history and current clinical conditions and the assessment of the functionality of the swallowing function. This screening is necessary, since they are associated with increased morbidity and mortality, leading to a variety of clinical complications, including: malnutrition, dehydration, loss of muscle mass and aspiration pneumonia. Therefore, this early assessment may prevent future clinical complications and improve the quality of life of people affected by this alteration. Objective: To identify factors related to the risk of dysphagia among hospitalized elderly. Methods: This is an analytical cross-sectional study with the participation of 52 elderly people admitted to a medical clinic at a public hospital in the Federal District. The Eating Assessment Tool, Strength, Assistance with walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs and Falls + Calf Circumference, Mini Nutritional Assessment shortform and the Eating Assessment Tool and Quality of Life in Swallowing Disorders were applied, in addition to data collection. sociodemographic data and health conditions. Results: Of the elderly participants, 30.8% had a risk of dysphagia self-reported by the EAT-10. Factors related to the risk of dysphagia were sarcopenia (p=0.04), malnutrition (p=0.008) and oral hygiene (p=0.03). Time to eat was the domain with the lowest score in quality of life. Conclusion: These results indicate that the risk of dysphagia is related to signs suggestive of sarcopenia, nutritional status and oral hygiene in hospitalized elderly. It is necessary to increase the recognition of dysphagia as an important geriatric syndrome and demonstrate to health professionals its impact on the functionality of the population, especially in the elderly during hospitalization. It is important to develop instruments of high sensitivity and specificity with quick and easy application.
