SUMMARY:

Dementia is a degenerative neurological syndrome, characterized by cognitive decline and/or behavioral changes that impact the individual's functionality. During the dementia process, the presence of feeding and swallowing difficulties is recurrent, which occur according to the stage and type of dementia. Dysphagia, defined as abnormal swallowing behavior, is an expected change in the course of dementia, which can lead to dehydration, malnutrition and recurrent respiratory infections. Objective: To analyze the characteristics of swallowing in elderly people with dementia. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional observational study, which will be carried out by consulting secondary data. It will be a convenience sample from all elderly people diagnosed with dementia who underwent speech-language screening at a Reference Center for Elderly Health Care in the Federal District, from September 2017 to December 2019. From the speech-language screening protocol, patient identification data, previous di gnoses, anamnesis and data from the functional evaluation of swallowing will be collected. Expected results: The aim is to trace the swallowing profile of elderly people with dementia. It is expected that there are differences in the swallowing profile of the elderly, according to their clinical conditions related to the stage of dementia and sociodemographic characteristics.
