SUMMARY:

Sports for people with disabilities currently transcends the role of rehabilitation and can become a professional career for athletes. However, for a high performance career, it is essential to have access to appropriate technology, financial, legislative and multi-professional support. The role of assistive technology is essential for the practice of adapted sports, and it can influence the athlete's performance and the occupational therapist is one of the professionals who can work with the paratleta in prescribing assistive technology. Objective: To understand how the three-dimensional seat digitalization system influences the performance of wheelchair athletes in the practice of sports and its applicability in this context. Method: This will consist of a randomized experimental study with 24 wheelchair-bound paraplegic athletes competing in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair rugby, adapted archery, para-badminton and bocce. The interventions and collections will be carried out in a large training center, a reference in paralympic sports, located in Brasilia, capital of Brazil. Standardized evaluations, validated performance tests and questionnaires will be applied. They will aim at understanding the socio-economic profile, expectations and satisfaction with assistive technology and measuring the athlete's sport performance before and after the intervention with the digitalized seat. An observation script will be prepared based on the factors described by the Matching Person and Technology (MPT) theoretical model (individual, environment, and device factors) and by the Human Occupational Model (MOHO) (volition, habituation, and performance capacity). The Intervention Group (IG) will consist of individuals who will receive an individualized digitized seat to use in the training context. The CG will be composed of individuals who will receive orientation about wheelchair seating, related public policies, access to this type of device (seating), and prevention of wheelchair pressure injuries. The data will be analyzed statistically and qualitatively between groups, within groups, and individually. Expected Results: It is expected to present the outcomes of the use of the 3-D digitizing seating system in para-sports and to understand if there was an influence on the performance of wheelchair athletes. Furthermore, it is expected to present occupational therapy and its intervention in this context guided by the use of theoretical models and standardized tests.
