“Despite the reduction in Food and Nutrition Insecurity (FNI) in Brazil, 271,000 households in the Distrito Federal have some degree of FNI. To overcome this situation, the Cartão Prato Cheio Program was implemented in 2020, which provides direct food provision through a card exclusive for purchase of food during nine months to the socially vulnerable population. Currently, approximately 100,000 families are served, but despite the scope, there is a lack of information on the perceptions of the families assisted. The objective of this study is to describe these perceptions about food and the administration of the aid by the program users. This is a cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative-qualitative study, with analysis of information from the database of the social assistance network of the Distrito Federal, responsible for registering the families, and semistructured interviews with the program users. The following categories emerged from the analysis of the interviews: experiences without the assistance, effects of the Cartão Prato Cheio, and user´s experiences with the program. There was an improvement in the quantity and quality of food, but it was not enough to fully meet the needs of the household residents. Other strategies were used to guarantee food, such as receiving food donations, using community restaurants and participating in other government assistance programs. It was possible to conclude that the program is focused and contributes to alleviating FNI in the Federal District.”
