SUMMARY:

The impact of the new informational ecosystem over political communication and behaviour have grown as interdisciplinary research agenda. Under this perspective, the study aims to contribute to the understanding of different dimensions of one of the available digital tools within the electoral campaigns (supply-side), through a case-study of the messages published by the main candidates during the 2018 and 2022 Brazilian presidential elections on Twitter. For such purposes, it adopts the theoretical background regarding the overlapping of social media, polarisation, social identity and propaganda, within the discussion between the interplay and of technological changes and relative political disintermediation. Particularly, it aims to understand how that platform – as an open and official channel – was used during the official campaign, considering strategies, framings and social networks. Such aspects are explored by variables as style, engagement, interaction, attacks and type of actors who were directly mobilized. The observational study adopts a mixed approach, combining content and network analyses, followed by a hypothesis test in order to verify if the follower’s approval could be associated to certain pattern of messages. It also intends to contribute by examining players of diverse ideological spectrum, in distinct moments, which enables at least three comparative dimensions. First, contrasting candidacies within each election; second, considering the patterns of the same political field, including the changes on challenger-incumbent and opinion poll leader factors; additionally, putting the result of the Brazilian case in the light of three divisive 2022 Federal Elections: French, Australian and Colombian. As mass informational developing points of the 20th Century also have presented, the current moment catalyses a powerful new arena for both communication and political dispute. Therefore, features of contemporary public debate, as well as the struggle for visibility and attention, opens ways for research projects on topics like digital campaigns.
