SUMMARY:

The Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) is the most important social movement of the New Brazilian Republic (1988-2016). Since its founding in 1984, the MST has always adapted its militant strategies and tactics to changes in the country's political context. The MST presents itself as a centripetal force of Brazilian activism, with the potential to articulate and even create new political organizations. In 2005 the MST created the Levante Popular da Juventude, as a way of "renewing the methods of the left". The LPJ was born from the MST and, thus, forms a complex articulation of collective action that goes beyond the notion of a network as a simple conformation of friendship ties between organizations. Thus, this project will have as a starting point the horizontal relationship between MST and LPJ. As of 2016, however, the political context that sets the tone of the New Republic changes radically. The parliamentary coup against President Dilma Roussef destabilizes the agreement on respect for the institutional system and the rules of the game, it is a new context, marked by the end of the New Republic and the deep separation between State and civil society. This project therefore aims to study how the authoritarian turn after the 2016 coup allowed the MST and the LPJ to reformulate their objectives and repertoires of action. It will be necessary to investigate: how do the programmatic, strategic and organizational transformations of the MST-LPJ network allow us to understand the relations between State and Society in Brazil after the 2016 coup?
