SUMMARY:

This research is part of the field of studies on the relationship between democracy and social movements, which, in different historical moments and in different parts of the world, have contributed to the processes of (re) democratization and democratic resistance from the extra institutional field.
It will study a moment in the contemporary history of Brazil, where, once again, democracy was attacked, this time, inside and outside democratic institutions, and more systematically between the years 2019 and 2022, which included the government of Jair Bolsonaro at the federal level, including an event that took place days after this chosen period: January 8, 2023.
The delimitation of the political and empirical field will be limited to one of these networks of democratic resistance active in the mentioned period, called the National Front People Without Fear.
The general objective is to research and try to explain how the networks of organizations that make up the Frente Povo Sem Medo articulated with each other and with other resistance networks in defense of Brazilian democracy and what were the main actions and tactical choices that made up the repertoire used. by these social and collective movements.
Specifically: to describe the repertoire used by Jair Bolsonaro through tactical actions, speeches by the president and mobilization of Federal Government institutions and their supporters, in attacks on democracy and in restricting citizen participation in government management; describe/demonstrate in diagrams, the formations and connections of the movements and collectives integrated to the FPSM and the relationship between them, in the protest events that will be chosen for study after a previous analysis and understand how the communication, the collaboration between them and the idealization of the repertoire, tactical actions and performances used in public demonstrations; report and analyze FPSM tactical actions that occurred as a counter movement, in response to events that attacked democracy.
The thesis question is: How was the People Without Fear Front articulated internally and externally and what repertoire did it use in the trench of democratic resistance, between the years 2019 and 2022?
As arguments, it is argued that the FPSM retained as much – or more – importance to the preservation of democracy, in relation to State institutions and that it, through extra institutional activism, collaborated with the approximation of the demos to the institutions and with the strengthening a model of participatory democracy.
The theoretical basis will include literature on participatory democracy, social movements, activism, repertoire, tactical choices and performances.
Methodologically, it will consider the use of Network Analysis, for understanding and visualization of the same, which make up the front and Case Studies, considering the main events, arranged in chronological tables, in each of the four years that promoted the articulation of the member organizations of this democracy defense network that formed the FPSM.
It will collect data in the academic bibliography in primary sources such as theses, dissertations, scientific articles on the Scielo platform and Portal de Periódicos da CAPES, websites and documents of FPSM organizations on the internet.
The networks will be analyzed online using automated tools for scraping publications on digital social media, which will facilitate the reconstitution and chronological organization, to later facilitate the selection of cases for study, such as protest events and public manifestations of resistance. It will use the online national press to record speeches and actions of attacks on democracy inside and outside the institutions, which generated counter-demonstrations of resistance and extra-institutional defense of democracy.
