Between the mirror and the photography: racial classification, inequalities and elections in Brazil
Race; Elections; Racial Classification; Inequalities; Political Representation
This work proposes to rethink inequalities in Brazilian politics based on the analysis of the racial classification of candidates for the Chamber of Deputies, made by external coders, in comparison to their self-declared color or race, in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 general elections. Therefore, the aim is to investigate the impact of using each method of classification in the estimates of racial disparities between the candidates in dispute. To fulfill this goal, quantile regression is used to build models assessing the likelihood of electoral success, taking as explanatory variables the race of the candidates and other attributes considered relevant by the literature. Thus, the research contributes to an area of studies still incipient in Political Science, critically reflecting on the complexity of the concept of race and on the ways of measuring it, by questioning its limits and potentialities.
