SUMMARY:

This work seeks to apply the concept of political-family capital using the Social Network Analysis (SNA) technique in a case study in the state of Bahia, identifying, especially, the Magalhães family. Although the theme of the presence of families with political power is not a recent phenomenon, nor has it been interrupted, contemporary political science and sociology have stopped including the family variable in their investigations that seek to understand and explain the political-social structure of Brazil. Divided into four chapters, this dissertation presents how the problem surrounding the family in politics has been addressed in the relevant research agenda in the field and problematizes the understanding of the role that families and elites played and play in the formation of Bahian and national politics. In a second step, the work seeks to build a methodological corpus that intersects Pierre Bourdieu's relational sociology and the SNA technique by analyzing the political career and family ties of those elected from 2004 to 2022 for the positions of mayor - of the most populous municipality from each of the state's 27 Identity Territories –, state and federal deputy, senator, and governor of Bahia. In the third chapter, it analyzes the context in which the actors develop and the construction of the Magalhães clan's protagonism based on the patriarch Antônio Carlos Magalhães. Finally, the last chapter gathers and analyzes the data found, providing visualization in network graphs, an unprecedented approach in the field. The conclusions are that the individuals investigated make up a group that is not very dense, but has a high level of cluster formation, that is, family clans. Furthermore, it is possible to identify that the political-family capital network reaches different institutions in the three spheres of power of the Republic.
